IDK, my BFF Spock?

Wow, I am going to hate saying this.  I completely adored Star Trek.  Yes, my reasons for seeing it ran between the understandable (despite overexposure, I think J’Abrams is a really cool director) and the undeniably superficial (I want to lick Chris Pine).  None of my reasons had anything to do with varying degrees of fondness for the franchise in any of its manifestations.  If anything, a horrible, horrible “team building exercise” of 1995 (in which, no kidding, Stephanie nearly broke her neck when a…well, long story, but we were “on the bridge of the Enterprise” and trying to get past some sort of “force field”) combined with the evil troll of a teacher whose primary obsession in life was Star Trek put me off of the entire Trekkie culture as badly as the time I drank too much sake and haven’t had sushi since.

However, and this is even excluding Chris Pine, who was, by all accounts (i.e., mine, and Natalie’s to a lesser extent) unquestionably lickable, I loved the movie.  When first we saw the USS Enterprise gleaming in space, I leaned over to Nat with a query: would this, I asked, be the appropriate time to say “f***ing epic…”?   It was, yes, the first of many.
